Why should I care about HTML5?

So, continuing with my technology trend, let us talk about HTML5 and how this will change the way you use the web. You're probably asking yourself, why does this even matter? What the heck is HTML5 anyway? Without going into too much web jargon, HTML5 is the new web standard, and is what many new websites will be built with.

HTML 5 is probably already affecting some of you without even knowing it. How you ask? Do you have a mobile phone with a mobile browser, such an iPhone, PalmOS, or Android device? This affects you now. HTML5 makes it easier for web developers to include media into their pages, without having to use Flash. Have you ever been annoyed that you can't really use websites on your phone because it doesn't have Flash on it? HTML5 has the potential to solve this problem.

Web services such as Gowalla, Vimeo, YouTube, and Google are starting the transition over to HTML5. Once again, the question is asked: why is this important? How does it affect the end user? How does it affect advertising?

To be honest, I'm not quite sure. But it does change things. Lets take for example Gowalla. This is a website that makes going places a game using the GPS in your phone to track where you've been (provided you tell it where you are at that moment. It doesn't automatically stalk you). Advertisers can use such technologies to their advantage to make some pretty creative advertising campaigns. They can use the GeoLocation to make games or supply advertising based on where you are geographically. It has the potential to make advertising much more immersive and interactive.

I guess we'll have to see, won't we?

Interactive Environmental Projection

One of the things that I absolutely love to do is read up on new technology. It's also really cool to read up on how people are taking advantage of these new technologies and making them do what they want artistically. For the longest time, I thought that art and science couldn't mix, but I learned that they totally can, which I think is awesome. One of the areas that I see changing and am the most interested in is the visual medium. People are doing some pretty crazy awesome stuff in original and creative ways.

I invite you into the world of Interactive Environmental Projection (what I call it, at least).

This has the potential to change how people interact with ads. People can interact with a product, and more importantly PLAY with a product. This could give people a closer connection to it, inviting them to eventually purchase the product.

Pretty crazy, huh?

A Creative Environment

"There are two ways of being Creative. One can sing and dance. Or one can Create an environment in which singers and dancers flourish."
     - Warren G. Bennis

I feel that when it comes to being creative, it always helps to have a little inspiration...

My elementary school art teacher once asked us to start keeping an Inspiration Box. She wanted us to take an empty shoe box and fill it with anything and everything we found that we liked or that sparked our creativity. Pictures from magazines, colorful leaves and flowers, a cassette of our favorite song, etc. Then we would have this collection to return to if we ever needed a little creative push.

I think its a great idea to collect things that inspire us and surround ourselves with them. While an empty room can be full of potential, a decorated room can be full of inspiration. I found this website over the summer that is mostly an interior design blog, but I think its great for all kinds of creative design. The people blogging are mostly creative people who design for fun, some talented designers working their way into the business, and those who are interested and want to learn more. It's pretty artsy and full of pictures. It's kind of like our blog, where people just post to share the things they love with others. Bloggers bring inspiration from all over the world and give lots of fun tips. One day someone will be asking how to spruce up an old and boring dresser, and the next they'll post pictures of awesome holiday decorations, or a creative art display they saw on their way to the train.

Even if this site isn't necessarily your style, I hope you find something that gets your creative juices flowing. Whether its clippings in a box, or a bookmarked page on Safari...Get inspired!
