Can advertising Hurt A Brand?

As many of you know Louis Vuitton is a luxury brand that it known for their designer bags. You might have noticed that very expensive luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Chanel, or Prada has generally used print advertisements such as magazines. Luxury items general don't advertise on TV because it would create an incredible amount of space. Goods costing at least a $1000 is not made for the common consumer but a small target. However, because of slumping sales and their desire to target the market in Asia they are now having ads.

Watch the news report here.

The news report mentions that they have a slumping image. I am not suprise. Their brand has been cheapened by the popularity of counterfiets. Their signature logo LV and print has been copied by horrible cheap fakes to immitated designer styles such as Dooney & Bourke. Personally, I wouldn't want a Louis Vuitton bag because people would question it's authencity. Now, can you image if I don't want it, why would some one who can afford it. Therefore, there are cheapening their brand even more by having tv ads. TV ads are for items that are mass marketed. Expensive bags are for a select targets that are wealthy enough to purchase the items. They are better off spending their money into researching how people perceive their brand, rebranding the company if needs be, and only use tactics that can stregnthen the brand image.
