Every Olympic year SPEEDO comes out with new swim suits for their Olympic teams. This Olympic season, the new suit is the LZR Racer suit. This suit is amazing. The suit is ultra lightweight, water repellent, the LZR Pulse (darker part) reduces muscle oscillations and skin vibration through powerful compression. The LZR Panels (lighter part) created less drag and are embedded at strategic points on the swimmers body to deliver optimum streamline shape and drag reduction. There is also a core stabilizer to help maintain the best body position in the water.
It is unbelievable how much engineering goes into these suits. Already 13 world records have been broken by swimmers wearing it in the past two months. Olympic trials, the fastest meet in the world, is coming up at the end of June ( Yes, it is faster than the Olympics) and it is going to be interesting to see the effects of this suit.
Speedo sponsored athletes get this suit specifically made for their bodies. They scan their bodies and then construct the suit from how the water hits them. In the picture above is Natalie Coughlin, she is the world record holder in the 100M backstroke (59.21), and the first woman under one minute in that race ever.

That is the most AMAZING thing ever. I used to collect popular science as a kid and just the thought of all these advances in something as unusual as fabric technology is mind boggling! How long will it be until we have nano-tech blankets that alleviate stress by massaging every muscle group in our body...from the inside!
Oh...scary :(
