Today, January 22, a new "top dog" was crowned. "Giant George" was announced as the world's tallest dog by the Guinness World Records. At seven feet and three inches from head to tail and 43 inches (3 ft 7 inches) from paw to shoulder, this Great Dane beat the previous record holder, another Great Dane, by 0.75 inches. Giant George gathered quite a following on his journey to be named the world's tallest and even appeared on Oprah in a feature called "That's Incredible". All of the media surrounding him, however, created some controversy over his actually height which ended up requiring an in-person measurement by an official adjudicator. This record has sparked interest in other pet records so Guinness World Records is launching a search for longest ears on a dog, smallest dog (length), oldest dog, smallest cat, and oldest cat.
