Last night’s power outage definitely caught us all by surprise. I was at the Student Life Building on campus. When the power went off, I assumed it would turn immediately back on, so I didn’t panic. But, nope, no power. I waited and still, no power. Thankfully the battery-operated security lights in the building turned on, or else everyone would’ve ran around and crashed into each other. I think the scary part of last night was not knowing what was happening. Not knowing the cause of the power outage. We stepped out of the building and couldn’t see anything. All we heard were sirens. People were quick to jump to conclusions. Someone compared it to Cloverfield. Someone said this was like a scene from a horror movie. I agree that it did feel surreal. As part of the staff at the SLB, we couldn’t leave the building until the cops came. So to pass the time, we played board games. What started as an unreal night turned into fun. While playing, we all shared stories and laughed together. It was interesting to see us all getting along as friends, because we didn’t all know each other. It felt like a ‘Breakfast Club’ moment. For that time period we all bonded, even though we’d most likely not speak to each other again.
We now have personal stories that we can share with our kids one day. Where were you last night when the power went out?
