So Valentine's Day is coming up and it got me thinking (as I'm sure it does every other girl). This one day is dedicated entirely to love. Girls dress in pink/red, guys make dinner reservations, students use it as a reason to throw a party, etc., etc. This celebration was definitely encouraged and driven by the commercial industry, but either way, we have accepted it and now girls and guys around the globe are expected to buy and act in a certain manner on this day.
But why?
I'm not at all the cynical type when it comes to Valentine's Day if I don't happen to have a significant other at the time. I actually handle it quite differently. Regardless, I get really into it and dress up for the occasion. I enjoy attending the "crushes" put on by various FSU organizations or watching a chick flick with some other girlfriends. I love getting excited with my friends who do have a Valentine and hearing every detail of their perfect (or not so perfect) dates. And of course I love helping them eat their goodies ;0) But why just flowers and candy?
I mean, flowers are nice, but they only last for a couple of days. Chocolate is great, but I have no self-control when it comes to food and I don't think that guys want to fatten their girls up on this day. So why can't guys get more creative?
I would MUCH more appreciate something with more thought and less money. Everyone has inside jokes, so use that to come up with something creative. If you absolutely are the worst dancer in the world but your girl loves to dance, take her dancing for Valentine's Day. The sacrifice on your part means much more. Especially if you're not the creative type and you come up with some really clever idea, it makes what you do that much more meaningful. (Although if you're from this class then you probably are creative and the expectations are probably higher). Whatever the case, I think its time to steer away from the traditional flowers and candy. Get creative boys, we're ready to be impressed!!!
