Death to Nielson in Sight????

Everyone [at least in this class] should now the problem with the Nielson diaries. It requires people to accurately recall and record what they watched on T.V. However, in this day and age, with over 80 channels and no real loyalties to a particular station or show, that is pretty hard. I know I can watch two shows at once. Well, it seems that:

"NS Media Research will use set-top box data from 100,000 DirecTV households around the country to mine new information about television viewing patterns."

Do you realize what that means. Apparently, it'll show by the second what shows are on. The coolest part, it will also record what commercials people watch. Which is amazing. Nielson doesn't do that. However, all great things have a down side. It doesn't record the demographics.

Well for all us ad majors it is something for us to be on a look out for.
