The Myth of "Having it All"

Today I got back from a 3 day weekend in Atlanta for the South Eastern Panhellenic Conference. For those of you who don't know, that is a conference that consists of all sorority women from states in the South Eastern US. Basically the weekend was filled with educational sessions put on by different inspirational speakers, most of who are employed by Campus Speak. Not only were these sessions geared towards Sororities and how to strengthen our chapters, but they also consisted of really helpful personally motivating presentations. For example, one lady name Christine Hassler did a presentation called The Myth of "Having it All". Christine was an over achiever from day 1. She was never the pretty, popular girl in school, so she focused all of her attention on academics. By the time she was 25, Christine was one of the youngest television agents in Hollywood, and she hated every minute of it. To some, she had it all. Success, money, a career, but none of it was making her happy. So, she quit her job, was dumped by her fiance, and had 7 more jobs until she found a career that really made her feel "successful". Throughout her presentation she talked about how 20 something women these days are forced to believe that by the age of 26 they need to be married starting a family with a career. But the truth is, all any of us need to do in order to be happy and "have it all" is to do what makes us happy. Just because we're all studying Advertising right now, doesn't mean that's what is going to make us happy 10 years from now. Hopefully for some of us it does, but if it doesn't, maybe try chasing that one dream that everyone said was a bad career move. It might just be the one thing that makes you happy.
