Superbowl

I'm not a huge sports fan. I mean, I love playing sports but I avoid watching them on television. The screen seems to extract too much energy from the games. When it's Superbowl Sunday however, I make a point of spending hours in front of the television watching giant men run back and forth, kicking, throwing and fumbling a leather lemon. Not only is it a great American tradition, but it's primetime for advertising. The Superbowl promises the greatest ads of the year. With advertisers paying $100,000 per second, they better be good.

This year I was looking forward to the ads for weeks. Unfortunately, when it was game time, I was a bit disappointed.

Only a few of the commercials really impressed me or genuinely made me laugh. I did enjoy most of the Doritos commercials. One in particular ("Free Doritos") was actually devised by amateur commercial makers. Doritos set up a contest with more than 1,900 entries. In the end, they narrowed it down to five finalists and then the public voted on the winning entry. Although "Free Doritos" was not my favorite (I am more of a "Beer Flavored Doritos" fan), I enjoyed their creativity.

I think part of my disappointment is a result of watching the "Top Ten Greatest Superbowl Commercials" special Saturday evening. It previewed the best commercials, so by Sunday, most of the surprise had worn off. I guess I will just look forward to next year in hopes of better ads.
