A week from this Tuesday will involve a lot of music, mayhem, and for some people a lot of meat. "Mardi Gras" is french for "Fat Tuesday." It is the day before Ash Wednesday, a day of celebration and a ton of partying before Lent's 40 days of sacrifice begin. Mardi Gras is celebrated in many cities of the world, but it is not necessarily called Mardi Gras; however, it is known as Carnival.
Hundreds of years ago, the followers of the Catholic religion in Italy started the tradition of holding a wild costume festival right before Lent begins. Since they are not supposed to eat meat during lent, they called their festival, Carnevale, which means "to put away the meat." Carnival in Europe, especially in Italy, is a very big deal and many people get very into it starting from this past weekend all the through to Fat Tuesday.
When I was in Italy a year ago, we indeed had ourselves a great time. Through the FSU International Florence Program we celebrated Fat Tuesday with dinner and a little costume competition. Even though I am Jewish I had to take part in this celebration, and my best friend and I were going to make sure to entertain and win this costume competition.
There were the ninja turtles, Michelangelo's, 80s themed, Marie Antoinette, and many more. We decided to do a little something different to exceed the competition. Guess who???
Nonetheless then CHARLIE CHAPLIN... We might have not won the Best Female Costume, but we did win the Best Male Costume!
Have an incredible FAT TUESDAY and celebrate it the right way with music, masks, and mayhem!!!
