Michael Phelps Pot Scandal

Before I begin to rant....I just want to say that I hope I don't offend anyone by writing this blog. As all of you probably know Michael Phelps got caught holding a bong in a photograph and the picture got sold to Fox news for a ton of money. First of all, who ever sold this picture is a huge jerk and just the worst kind of person. Secondly, It irritates me to no end that this picture has caused a big controversy and that Phelps got suspended from USA swimming for 3 months.

I think that Phelps needs to stand up for himself and help in the movement to decriminalize marijuna. It is so strange to me that almost everyone uses or has used marijuana at one time in their lives and have either liked it and started smoking it on the regular or didnt like it and never smoked it again, but pot is still treated as a dangerous and illegal drug. Drinking alcohol is far more dangerous than smoking marijuana because you loose the ability to think, alchohol eventually shuts down parts of your brain when you get "drunk." How many times have you ever heard someone needing to go to "Marijuana Anonnymous" classes, exactly never. Although it is said to be a gateway drug, I personally think that the type of kid who would do serious drugs like heroine or cocaine is going to do these drugs regardless of whether they smoked marijuana first, the drugs are nothing alike. For example, at my high school many kids smoked weed but the kids that did the big drugs were the kids that were the trouble makers all throughout grade school. Again this is just my opinion from what I've experienced.
Before I keep going on and on because I can argue about this forever, the main point I am trying to make is that marijuana is not a dangerous drug and people usually do not become addicted to it, so making the use of it a crime punishes innocent people and is hypocritical. A supreme court justice got caught smoking pot not too long ago. Phelps won 8 gold medals in the last olympics and smokes pot, that is a great example of why it is not a dangerous drug. If he gets his medals taken away that would be extremely wrong, it's not like he was doing steriods like every frickin baseball player in the US. Leave Phelps alone, it's ridiculous how blown out of poportion this whole "scandal" has become.
The only thing I can say about the situation that goes against what I have been saying is the effect it has had on young swimmers. My old swim coach asked his high school kids what they thought about it and they feel like I do, they think its awsome, but his little kids were upset. I think its because they dont know what weed is by experience so they just see marijuana as something illegal, therefore bad. Also I think they are just upset that Phelps, a role model for them, is in trouble on the news.
