At one point in high school my best friend came back from UNF with a boyfriend named Fabio Ferrari, who was pretty much so steamingly perfect that we were worried he was actually gay. My best friend was the lucky recipient of beautiful paintings, love songs, poetry, and even ornate Fabio-made pastries. Fabio was also an amazing salsa dancer, so soon my friend asked me to start taking salsa lessons with her so that she didn't "look a hot mess" when he took her out dancing. So, long after Fabio, after my eventual and not-exciting-at-all breakup with the so-called bff, I was still living it up in the salsa classroom every Wednesday. I progressed to the "Advanced" level fairly quickly, but when the instructor started lecturing me on practicing every day and shelling out the $10/week became too painful I decided to give it up. BUT, one of the coolest things I noticed while I was there was that salsa isn't limited to a certain age group. When it comes to going out dancing, you wouldn't expect to see your grandparents grinding to rap music in night clubs (sorry for the mental image), but there was a grandmother salsa dancing with her grandson in that class every week. SO, one time when my grandmother was visiting, I convinced her to go with me. It wasn't quite her thing, but apparently it made quite an impression on her, because she just emailed me the video below. As painful and annoying as getting old will be, a part of me looks forward to finding out what kind of crazy old lady I will become and which creative outlets I will explore. The woman in the video below is 87, and she makes me look old!
