Freelance or Full-Time?

One of the things that you may want to think about before entering corporate America is this: freelance or full-time?

I currently am a freelance web designer and LOVE it. The freedom to work when I want is phenomenal, being able to pick my clients is great, and I love being able to do exactly what I love doing. You may not be able to get this in Corporate America. In C.A., you have to work the 9-5, sit at a desk all day and not necessarily do what you love. You can stare out the window all day wondering what it would be like outside, doing something else. Something great about being a freelancer is that I can be working outside, enjoying the beautiful day!

What are the downsides of freelancing? Not having work for months on end. Unless you are an amazing freelancer, there is the chance that you may not have clients back to back, which means you don't have any financial security. Also, you are the only person in the "company." If you mess up, it's your fault, and YOU just lost a client, not someone else. Also, you can't take 30 sick days in the year because you still have to work! So in that sense, it is like a full time job.

One of the great things about a full time position is that you do have financial security, and benefits for that matter! If you work for yourself, that isn't necessarily the case. But, if you're adventurous and like trying new things, and are good at what you do, consider freelancing. It's pretty sweet.

A great place for more information is Freelance Switch, or Freelance Folder
