FYI: HHM Sept. 15 -- Oct. 15

Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM) commenced this past Monday, September 15. It covers a 30-day period ending on October 15. HHM is the period to recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States and to celebrate Hispanic heritage and culture. The observation started in 1968. "September 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. They all declared independence in 1821. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively."

Here at Florida State we are fortunate enough to have an extraordinary Hispanic/ Latino Student Union which will be hosting and co-sponsoring 22 events within the 30 day period. The theme this year is "Nuestra Gente: Who We Are." Here is a list of the events that have taken place this week alone: “We are Heritage”Hispanic Heritage Month Opening Ceremony, “We are Diverse”Latin American Differences Seminar, “We are Sabores” Soul Food con Sazón, and “We are Ritmo” Hispanic Heritage Month Opening Celebration!.

For a list of all upcoming events and any other information about HHM and HLSU, check out the Facebook group: Hispanic Latino Student Union and/ or message me. Remember, you do not have to be a member to participate, all events are free to the public as well as students, and you do not need to be Hispanic or know spanish to be a member/ participate.
