I've been thinking a lot about Tuesday's class when Tom said the creativity isn't something you're just born with, like some people have it and others don't. It surprised me. I've always thought that there were people that are either analytical or artsy. Of course you could have a bit of both, but mostly people are either right of left brain.
Not to say that I think I was born amazingly creative, I’ve just always been better in the arts than the sciences. The idea that creativity can be taught really interests me since I can’t just be “creative.” It doesn’t work that way for me. I’m the most creative at the most random times. I’ll see something or hear something completely unrelated to anything that will spark an idea. It comes and goes as it pleases.
This made me wonder what creativity means. I can’t tell you what it means but I know it when I see it. Creativity seems to be very subjective and highly individualistic. I think that by definition, creativity is indefinable. For some, creativity is the newest, most cutting-edge design, idea, or technique, etc. While I love this, as I am an early-adapter to most anything (stupid Apple and their infinite amount of awesome technology), it’s not my favorite type of creativity. I absolutely love the most basic, simplest creativity possible. Take something that I know, something that has always been a certain way to me and make me see it in a way I’ve never thought possible. It’s like that old black and white optical illusion. You see the two old men staring at each other. But then, out of no-where is the vase. It was there the whole time. Nothing’s changed. It’s still the same picture. I’m just seeing it in a whole new light. To me that is creative. And hopefully, I can learn to be it.
This ad is simply called "Mr. W" and it is an amazingly creative take on an otherwise uncreative subject.
