Are Video Games Art?

The game type: Execution. The map: Jacinto. The character: Benjamin Carmine. The round begins and I'm pressing the A button on the controller like there's no tomorrow to rush the most powerful weapon in the game. As I reach the steps of what is classified as a "grenade tower", helicopters swarm the skies, unreachable, but nonetheless a beautiful distraction. What game am I talking about? That would be Gears of War 2.

This game has a lancer with a chainsaw attached to it. How sick is that? Given as well that you can now chainsaw duel. The game also allows you to pick up enemies when they're on their knees and use them as a meatshield. This game even has a story worth playing through, over and over and over again. And let me be the first to say, it is truly an emotional trip.

But, above all else, Gears of War 2 stands in a line of games that display video games as an art form. The level of detail is astonishing with each step you take. The environment in fact interacts with you. At times if you don't move fast enough or take enough initiative, you will die. Although sometimes, it is worth it, because you may notice something different. Without a doubt, the most impressive part is the multiplayer mode. You can play 5-on-5 and on top of that, the maps sometimes have hidden treasures, or what some may categorize as "easter eggs".

If you have an Xbox 360 and you don't have Gears of War 2, what are you waiting for? It's worth buying twice! Just kidding. Once is fine.
