"The Cocktail Creationist"! I found this article about the whole marketing genius behind Grey Goose premium vodka. It turns out this vodka, the whole story behind it (bottled in France, filtered through champagne rock), and it's name were created before the vodka even was! I am sure many of us are familiar with the high end, distinctive bottle, but most do not know the whole story behind it. Most would find it interesting that it actually is not of much higher quality any other vodka, such as Smirnoff. I will quote from the article,
"Yes, some people may taste a difference,” says Wright of Liquid Intelligence. “But you’re talking about a grain-neutral spirit. The FDA definition is pretty narrow. At an elemental level, there is no difference. And anyway, you can’t possibly taste it when it’s in a Cosmopolitan. Grey Goose is about quality because Sidney Frank said it was about quality.”
Also many would not realize that Grey Goose was sold to Bacardi for more than $2 billion. Cash. (To understand how much that is, consider that IBM’s personal-computer business, nurtured, honed, and advertised since 1981, recently sold for $1.75 billion.)
This article really shows the genius behind Sidney Frank's marketing madness. He created an entire empire by good marketing and PR strategy. From designing the fogged glass bottle, to giving it the appeal of it being made in France (instead of Russia, where most vodka is made), to having it delivered in wood crates instead of cardboard boxes, this is truly an intriguing story to read!
